Biography

Biography (2024)

Bloodclot is an American Hardcore/Punk/Thrash band from New York City, lead by iconic vocalist, author & Ironman Triathlete, John “Bloodclot” Joseph, formally of NY’s legendary Cro-Mags. Bloodclot originally formed in 1981 just before the legendary East Coast Bad Brains tour. The band opened up nightly and was comprised of their roadies, as well as the soundman/producer of the ROIR Sessions album, the late Jay ‘Dublee’.

In 2007 John began working with Danny Schuler (Biohazard drummer), Scott Roberts, and Rick Lopez. We recorded “Burn Babylon Burn” and released it to rave reviews. We played shows stateside and in Europe as well.

Fast forward 2015, John was with the Cro-Mags and the guitarist AJ Novello had a family emergency and had to drop off. John asked longtime friend and former bandmate Todd Youth (Danzig, Motorhead, Murphy’s Law) to fill in and he did.  John recalls, ”We stayed up all night talking about doing some new music together for a new band.  He played me riffs in the hotel room and I had wrote lyrics to them on the spot. We went our separate ways, Todd (LA), me (NYC), but vowed to get the songs and the new band happening.”

“We wrote and recorded a handful of tunes and passed them on to Brian Slagel of Metal Blade records and he signed us. We added Joey Castillo (Danzig, Queens of the Stone Age) on drums and Nick Oliveri (QOTSA) on bass and we kept writing for the full length.  Brian flew to NYC to meet with me and I had Michael Alago who signed Metallica, White Zombie and many others, Executive Produce and broker the deal.”

“Up in Arms” was released by Metal Blade Records in July 2017 and recieved international attention, many saying it was the best punk/hardcore album to come out in years. They did a U.S. tour and won over crowds nightly.  Then after the tour tragedy struck.  Todd relapsed into heroin addiction and sadly lost his life.  There was no question at that point of replacing him and continuing.  They had lost a family member.

Then in 2019 John ran into Tom Capone (Quicksand) in NYC. He said he loved “Up in Arms” and John loved his playing and writing in Quicksand.  “I wanted to continue moving forward with Bloodclot and so I asked Tom to write some songs. Then the Covid-19 pandemic hit and the world shut down.  The future of everything seemed uncertain.”

Not to be deterred they kept writing and rehearsing, adding drummer Darren Morgenthaler (Madball) and Craig Setari (Sick of it All) on bass.  “SOULS” was released in December 2022 on Upstate Records. Produced by Laz Pina of ill-Nino with Chris Collier (Korn, Prong, Metal Church, White Snake) mixing the album.  The record hits you like a haymaker punch to the face, mixing musical influences of everyone involved.

Now, in 2024 Bloodclot is writing new material and planning on touring in 2025. The band continues on with all the members from “Souls” with the addition of Christian Olde Wolbers (Fear Factory, Violence, Cypress Hill) filling in on bass.

One thing is for sure – after everything this band has been through over the years – Bloodclot are determined to keep the legacy alive and honor all past members by doing what they do… bringing that insane energy to the stage every night!  They will be playing their entire catalog with a few added surprises thrown in.
